Federal Government Updates  

  • Mobilizing and Empowering the Nation and Technology to Address Loneliness & Social Isolation (MENTAL) Health Innovation Challenge

MD Government Updates 

  • Department of Housing and Community Development, Round II NORI funding. Support for operating costs due to impact of COVID 19 for organizations in economic development/recovery, housing, health and human services.
  • MD Energy Administration Commercial, Industrial, Agricultural Grant Program Grants to nonprofit enterprises in the commercial and industrial sector for projects to reduce energy consumption by at least 18%.

Private Funder Updates

  • Cigna Foundation Grants to support children’s mental health and food insecurity
  • Center for Sharing Public Health Services small grants

A Community Thrives Grant Opportunity 
The USA TODAY Network is accepting applications to its A Community Thrives crowdfunding and grant-making program supporting community-building projects and local operating expenses. Check it out here. Grants are from $2500 to $100,000. The deadline is September 11.

Nonprofit COVID-19 Response Meeting August 26 Highlights

Ralph Watkins from the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County provided updates on current voting procedures. He provided forms for Designation of Agent in English and Spanish.
due to COVID the number of polling places in Montgomery County will be greatly reduced.  Voters are encouraged to vote by mail.

  • Applications for a mail in ballot are arriving in the mail now; you can also request a ballot online at elections.maryland.gov.
  • Mail in ballots must be postmarked before 8pm on November 3.  Voters are encouraged to send ballots in early.
  • Early voting takes place October 26-November 2.  There are 11 locations for early voting and those locations can be found on the Board of Elections website.
  • The League of Women Voters produces Election Guides in English and Spanish with unbiased information on candidates and ballot issues. Email LWVMC@erols.com for the guides and more.

We also heard from Lynn Arndt, BlackRock Center for the Arts and Michael Rubin, Impact Silver Spring on how they are updating their programs and work to meet their clients changing ways. Currently, BlackRock is the Upcounty Consolidation HubClick here to see a chart of what they are doing and with whom they are working.

BoardMatch Montgomery

BoardMatch Montgomery, a collaboration between Nonprofit Montgomery, Leadership Montgomery, and Capacity Partners, helps nonprofit organizations recruit effective and engaged board candidates to serve on their boards of directors. BoardMatch recruits and trains potential board members and matches them with nonprofits.

BoardMatch Montgomery benefits nonprofit organizations by:

  • Strengthening board practices,
  • Increasing board effectiveness and engagement,
  • Providing the opportunity to be matched with highly-qualified, trained board candidates.

Professional Development Opportunity for Program Directors

FIRM for Program Directors is a multi-day workshop that provides program directors and department leaders with a deeper understanding of the financial processes, planning, and decision making that support strong program and organizational sustainability. Participants will learn about program level financial modeling, strategic budgeting, and financial reporting to build confidence and competence in making decisions that balance assets and outcomes (aka money and mission) for individual programs and the organization at large.

The program delivery will be a mix of LIVE and self-paced sessions over two weeks as follows …

  • LIVE Sessions will be delivered using Zoom and facilitated by our instructor. The first one will be an orientation and introduction for everyone. The following sessions will be specific Q&A sessions around the topics covered throughout the program in the self-passed modules
  • Self-Guided Modules – each module consists of 30-40 minutes of pre-recorded content along with linked planning tools and prompts – expect to spend about an hour with your team on each module.

  • September 11, 9-10am: LIVE Orientation: 30-40min (3 content modules also posted)
  • September 16, noon to 1pm: LIVE Q&A on Module 1: 45-60min
  • September 18, noon to 1pm: LIVE Q&A on Module 2: 45-60min

COVID Challenge with MobileMed and Mercy Health Clinic

Two Nonprofit Montgomery members, MobileMed and Mercy Health Clinic, are collaborating with Rotary Club of North Bethesda on a very timely event. The COVID Challenge will kick off on September 1 and will run the entire month of September. The COVID CHALLENGE is an opportunity to challenge yourself and friends to set goals for physical activities Take a picture to celebrate your success and share it on social media using #COVIDChallenge!

Funds raised through the COVID CHALLENGE will benefit these three charitable organizations in its delivery of services to support underserved youth and families in Montgomery County.

Nonprofit COVID-19 Response Meeting

Join Nonprofit Montgomery for our now twice a month virtual meeting with Montgomery County and nonprofit leaders on Wednesday at 11am. This will be an opportunity to hear from our officials and receive updates on the local covid-19 response.

Ralph Watkins, League of Women Voters: will focus on what organizations can do as they are serve various populations.

How can nonprofits adapt to meet new needs? We’ll hear from two nonprofit leaders who have found new ways to serve the community. 
Lynn Ardnt, CEO, BlackRock Center for the Arts: will provide the background and updates on how BlackRock is housing the Upcounty Consolidation Hub, a temporary consolidation center for donated essential goods for communities in Upper Montgomery County.
Michael Rubin, Managing Director, Impact Silver Spring: will go over how Impact Silver Spring has pivoted to meet the needs of their community.

Franca Brilliant, Nonprofit Consultant: will discuss grants and funding opportunities for nonprofits

Learn How to be a Community Advocate

The Community Action Board’s Community Advocacy Institute provides residents with the opportunity to learn and utilize basic advocacy skills. Participants must attend virtual monthly workshops and complete an advocacy project (testifying before County Council or submitting a letter to County Council) in order to graduate from the program. This year, all workshops will be live interactive webinars.

Participants must be Montgomery County residents with a combined household income of $56,000 or less. Applications are due August 28.
