In April, Councilmember Marc Elrich introduced legislation calling for an increase of the county’s minimum wage to $15/hour by 2020. The public hearing is scheduled for June 21, 7:30pm. Nonprofit Montgomery will be at the hearing to testify that this legislation should be accompanied by increased county government contract terms to support the increased wage costs that nonprofit organizations will bear.

On June 14, 2016, the County Council will hold a public hearing to discuss proposed legislation to create a Five Year Strategic Plan to End Food Insecurity in Montgomery County. Several Nonprofit Montgomery members such as Manna Food Center and MCCH are planning to testify. These food assistance organizations will make the case that a multi-stakeholder approach to creating innovative strategies, coupled with sufficient public and private resources, can make food security a reality for all of our neighbors. The public hearing will be held on June 14, 1:30-3:30pm in the Third Floor Hearing Room, 100 Maryland Avenue, Rockville. Please attend in support of your peers and the residents they serve.

Assembly Rep. Jim Frazier introduced Assembly Bill (AB) 2855 to the California Assembly, which has now upset nonprofit sector. The proposed bill stated that all 501c3 nonprofits who fundraise in the state of California (not just based in the CA state) be mandated to fully disclose their overhead spending on their websites and indicate the percentage of the nonprofit’s overall funding that is spent on overhead. Renewing your membership online is easy. Nonprofit Montgomery’s reasonable membership dues are based on the size of your organization’s budget, and there is a $25 early bird discount if you join by July 31.
New policy changes coming this summer may have the potential to affect the costs and operations of nonprofit organizations that have government grants and contracts. The policy changes involve the expected publication of the Labor Department’s revised overtime regulations and potential revisions to the OMB Uniform Guidance affecting how nonprofits spend grant funds. To help improve policies and/or develop solutions to avoid potential adverse impacts, the nonprofit sector needs to produce data. Greater input from a broad cross-section of the nonprofit community will produce better policies and solutions. Take the survey today.
