Montgomery County Census 2020

2020-03-09T12:33:05-04:00March 6th, 2020|Advocacy, Member News|

Census 2020 is almost here! Invitations to respond to the first ever online Census will arrive in homes starting on March 12. Nonprofits have an important role to play by reaching vulnerable and often-undercounted communities. If your organization needs support in the Census, please reach out to the County Census office for fact sheets, handouts, posters, pencils, social media posts, videos, mapping tools, and more to support nonprofit outreach.  You can also connect with the County’s regional census committees for help.

What our members are doing:

  • Gaithersburg Help is attaching census flyers in English and Spanish to every bag of food they give away, with a note about why completing the Census is important.
  • MCAEL is encouraging ESOL and English Language Learners nonprofits to build lesson plans around the Census to encourage one-on-one conversations.
  • Community Reach is holding outreach events on April 2 and 3 at three senior apartment buildings. They will serve lunch and bring tablets to help seniors complete the census online.
What is your nonprofit doing to help with the Census? Email your ideas to us and we will feature creative ideas in future enews and on Facebook!

We love hearing from our members!

You asked for comparative salary data, and we are about to deliver. Nonprofit Montgomery is partnering with Maryland Nonprofits to gather current data on nonprofit salaries and benefits. A Montgomery County version of the 2020 Salary and Benefits Report will be published in June. Previously the Salary and Benefits Report reflected data from the entire state. Now we will have local data to benchmark salaries and benefits for key nonprofit positions.

Nonprofit Montgomery Members will receive:

  • the executive summary
  • the full Montgomery County report
  • an invitation to the presentation about the results

The Salary Survey will be available in this month. To be a success we will need every member organization to participate in the survey. Stay tuned to our newsletter for more information.

Court Watch Montgomery’s New Executive Director

2020-02-14T11:28:00-05:00February 8th, 2020|Member News|

Court Watch Montgomery’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Carolyn Hoffmann has been selected as the organization’s new Executive Director. Court Watch Montgomery reduces intimate partner violence in Maryland by ensuring victims have access to responsive justice and vital services that can stop the abuse quickly and permanently. We work towards the day when all domestic violence victims coming to court for legal protection are safe, treated with respect, and receive comprehensive legal protections that help stop their abuse. We closely monitor the court system and make our findings public. With the help of our volunteers, we have been successful in bringing about change, but there is much more to be done.

Carolyn brings with her nearly a decade of experience and expertise in domestic violence, sexual violence, victim services, and nonprofit management. Carolyn comes to Court Watch after serving as a Director at the National Center for Victims of Crime. In addition to her past roles supervising victim advocates and managing large grants, Carolyn serves as a part-time Training Supervisor for RAINN’s DoD Safe Helpline and sits on the committee for the DoD Sexual Assault Advocate Certification Program (D-SAACP) as a subject matter expert. “I am incredibly honored to be chosen to lead Court Watch in its second decade. This organization does such meaningful work and has a great impact on court outcomes for survivors who choose to engage in the civil and criminal systems in Montgomery County. I am committed to helping Court Watch grow and thrive in its future endeavors,” said Carolyn.

“Carolyn comes with a wealth of experience that will ensure Court Watch continues to make big strides in improving how our courts handle domestic violence cases for years to come,” said Laurie Duker, Court Watch Montgomery’s co-founder and outgoing Executive Director. The Board expresses our excitement for Carolyn’s dedication to justice and passion for creating safer spaces for survivors. After a unanimous decision by Court Watch’s Board, Carolyn began the position in January 2020.

Nonprofit Montgomery Member Year-End Giving Survey Results

2020-01-22T13:48:27-05:00January 22nd, 2020|Member News, Uncategorized|

Earlier this month we asked Nonprofit Montgomery members about 2019 year-end giving. Here are some of the results.

The majority of respondents saw an increase in year-end giving from 2018 and the rest saw about the same level giving and/or a decrease. In response to what was the decrease in percentage in year-end giving, it ranged from 2% to 50%.

These are some of the comments on how year-end giving performed.
  • a lot of donors complained about the number of emails/alerts they received during Giving Tuesday and said it was overwhelming.
  • It appears that we had far fewer donations in the 101 – 499 dollar range. Perhaps those are donors more impacted by the tax law change?
  • We had fewer individual donors this year but more $ donated. Also seeing Donor Advised Funds being utilized more now.
  • We lost one of our peer-to-peer fundraisers. Also, #GivingTuesday was late this year. These may have factored in to the decrease.
  • An approx 6% increase in year end campaign revenue. We had a higher # of donations than at year end 2018, but a slightly lower average amount.
  • Lack of tax incentive plus an overwhelming glut in the ask environment meant the giving season was absurd. We are no longer counting on small dollar individual gifts and hope the tax law changes soon.
  • We made MANY more major gift requests this year which resulted in a huge increase (relatively speaking, of course) in individual giving to our annual fund.
  • Fewer donors, but bigger gifts.
  • Year-end giving was an extremely low turnout. As a small nonprofit, I wonder if it’s even worth it to add to the email inbox clutter?
  • While the amount seems like a small decrease, the amount of effort put into solicitation was greater, making this drop feel more substantial.
