On November 16 Jordan McCarthy of Tech Impact led a workshop on nonprofit security for a group of our members. During the session he helped navigate the tricky world of online security, including how to identify areas of vulnerability and low-cost ways to secure our data, including our client and organization’s sensitive information. In this rapidly evolving security world, nonprofits need the support of security professionals to protect themselves from current and emerging threats.

Introduction to Finding Grants & Proposal Writing at Rockville Library

Montgomery County Public Libraries (presented by the Foundation Center/Grantspace) is offering a free two-part seminar on finding grants and proposal writing for nonprofits at the Rockville Memorial Library. Participants will be able to: plan nonprofit funding research, identify funders that fit, match your organization to the right grant, and search Foundation Center databases. Intro to Finding Grants: Tuesday, November 13, 7-8pm and Intro to Proposal Writing, November 20, 7-8pm.

Recovering Indirect Costs on Federal and State Grants or Contracts

Learn how you should determine and recover the “indirect costs” of providing services for the state or federal government.

This workshop will include:

  • A review of revisions to federal “cost principles” and the rules that govern what constitutes, and how to calculate, “indirect costs” for nonprofits.
  • Explanation of the changes in new Office of Management and Budget uniform guidance on the use of federal funds, and how these federal changes will apply in Maryland to state-funded grants and contracts.
  • Overview of Senate Bill 1045, which requires that nonprofit providers be allowed to charge at least a minimum indirect cost rate of 10%.
  • Hands-on exercises based on your own organization’s activities and finances.
Who Should Attend:
Leaders and finance staff of nonprofits that have or are seeking government grants or contracts.

Beth Bowsky is the National Council of Nonprofits’ Policy Specialist for Government-Nonprofit Contracting, a role in which she combines her unique blend of nonprofit and government experience to manage the Council’s multi-year and multi-faceted program to promote fairer and simpler contracting processes and procedures across the country.

Let us walk you through the basic steps!

Join Jordan McCarthy, Tech Impact Infrastructure & Security Lead for a seminar to lead you through the “Who, What, Where and Why” of combating security threats. Learn who the bad actors are, why they want your data and how you can arm your organization with that knowledge. We’ll also discuss common attacks and types of solutions available to nonprofits to combat them (nonvendor specific). Please come with your questions and concerns!

Most importantly: You will leave the session with a plan specific to your needs. Jordan will help you create an assessment of your organization’s specific threats and prioritized next steps for securing your organization.
