Urban Institute: Catalyst Grant Program
The Urban Institute and the Microsoft Justice Reform Initiative have opened the Request for Proposals for the next round of the Catalyst Grant Program, due December 2. The program supports local 501(c)(3) nonprofits to launch projects using data and technology to advance racial equity in the adult criminal legal system in three front-end focus areas: prevention, policing, and prosecution.

City of Rockville: Human Services Grant
Opens November 2022. Grants annually to local organizations that partner with the city to support human services access in the city.

MD Dept. of Commerce: Child Care Capital Support Revolving Loan Fund
The Child Care Capital Support Revolving Loan Fund is a financing resource operated by the Department of Commerce, with support from the State Department of Education, to provide no-interest loans for capital expenses to child care providers who participate in the State Department of Education’s Child Care Scholarship Program.

MD State Dept. of Education: The Maryland Rebuilds Initiative
This is a competitive MSDE grant opportunity designed to support the state’s child care system in utilizing federal funds to stabilize, strengthen, and sustain the child care system and mitigate the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The deadline for grant application submissions has been extended. Applications are due November 10.

TD Charitable Foundation: Non-Profit Training Resource Fund
Through this TD Charitable Foundation funded program, nonprofits can receive a grant for approved training to increase their organization’s capacity and skillset.

Digital Lift: Software Grant
Digital Lift will provide up to a maximum of $1,000 per nonprofit for eligible requests. Applications close October 31.

Josephine Garnem Named Director of Montgomery Moving Forward

Rockville, MD – Nonprofit Montgomery is excited to announce the hiring of Josephine Garnem as the new Director of Montgomery Moving Forward, Nonprofit Montgomery’s Collective Impact initiative.

Ms. Garnem brings extensive experience as a leader and collaborator within the county and across the globe. She is highly skilled in community outreach, policy development, and cross-sector engagement strategies.

Ms. Garnem currently works for Montgomery County Government’s Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center as a Program Manager and was formerly the Continental Africa Liaison for the County Government’s Office of Community Partnerships.

She is also the Founder and CEO of Khalil Garnem Foundation, a nonprofit focused on providing equitable health care, education, and economic development to underprivileged communities in Sierra Leone. She leads volunteer diaspora medical, surgical, and training initiatives.

Ms. Garnem currently sits on the boards of The Michael and Mauritia Patcha Foundation, the Healey International Relief Foundation, and Carpe Diem Arts and is on the national council for Pax Christi, USA.

Given Ms. Garnem’s experience with a wide variety of organizations, businesses, government, and funders, she is well suited to build on the foundation of the cross-sector work of Montgomery Moving Forward. Ms. Garnem will assume her role as Director of Montgomery Moving Forward on November 14, 2022.

Lavontte Chatmon Named Executive Director of Nonprofit Montgomery

Lavontte Chatmon Named Executive Director of Nonprofit MontgomeryRockville, MD – The Nonprofit Montgomery Board of Directors is pleased to announce that it has named Lavontte Chatmon as Executive Director.

Lavontte first joined Nonprofit Montgomery as the Program & Membership Director in July 2021 and has served as the Interim Executive Director since mid-April. Lavontte has over 13 years of nonprofit experience in program development, operations, and management. Lavontte has worked on several major national programs and has a professional background in mental health services, women’s rights, and victim services. Lavontte is dedicated to the promotion of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access and has developed BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) affinity groups and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) committees in her previous roles. Her past experience includes working at the National Center for Victims of Crime, Polaris Project, the National Abortion Federation, and RAINN.

Lavontte currently serves on the Board of Directors of Montgomery Women and Court Watch Montgomery. She also sits on Montgomery County’s Domestic Violence Coordinating Council and is a member of Impact 100DC, the Maryland Women of Color Network, and the Tahirih Justice Center’s Forced Marriage workgroup.

“We are so fortunate to have Lavontte assuming the role of Executive Director,” said Board President Jackie DeCarlo. “During her tenure as Interim Executive Director, Lavontte has shown extraordinary leadership, commitment, and vision—not only keeping the organization running smoothly during a transition but also building on Nonprofit Montgomery’s record of accomplishments. The organization recently won an 8% increase in Montgomery County funding for nonprofits in FY 2023, launched two major capacity-building projects directed at Early Care and Education (ECE) providers and small and emerging nonprofits, and facilitated the establishment of a new coordinating entity to strengthen ECE in the County. I invite the Nonprofit Montgomery membership and community partners to join the Board in congratulating Lavontte as we continue to push for a stronger, more diverse, and inclusive nonprofit sector in Montgomery County.”

All nonprofits can benefit from this deep dive into understanding and strengthening your financial model, particularly now in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on programs and organizations. As organizational leaders navigate dynamic changes and pressures to adapt how their organizations operate, understanding the role of financial leadership and strong fiduciary capacity becomes more critical to success and longer term sustainability.

FIRM provides tools, models, and frameworks that strengthen your ability to identify, manage, and assess the assets you put to work to achieve organizational outcomes.

Who should attend: Nonprofits attend as a team of up to four people including the Executive Director, Finance Director/CFO, Board Member, and Program Director.

The results: Better connection between your mission and internal structure, increased clarity on outcomes and the assets needed to support them; greater strategic budgeting and reporting process; and improved financial conversations across the organization (board and staff).

Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County: Wheaton Cultural Project Grants
Wheaton Cultural Project Grants (WCPG) are available to arts and/or humanities organizations and groups located in Montgomery County, MD that may or may not be incorporated as non-profit organizations with 501(c)(3) status and individual artists and scholars who reside in Montgomery County, MD. Grants for FY23 will be awarded for activities occurring between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023. Application Deadline – Friday, October 21, 2022 at 11:59 p.m.

Many Hands Grant: Grant funds must be used to serve women, children, and/or families in socioeconomic need. There are four grants each year, one in each of four focus areas–economic empowerment, education, health, and housing.

The Community Development Block Grant Program is a federal grant for housing and community development projects that benefit low and moderate-income persons. This grant funds capital repairs for nonprofit facilities or group homes that serve a majority low-to-moderate-income individuals.

The City of Rockville extended the due date for new applications to Friday, October 14, 2022.
