Title: Youth Developer
Program: MMYC Montgomery County Mentoring
Reports to: Mentor Program Manager

SUMMARY:

The Latin American Youth Center’s Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers (LAYC/MMYC) in Montgomery County serves youth and young adults ages 17-24 by providing GED instruction, Job Readiness Training and life skills workshops, and wrap around supportive services. Through this holistic experience, participants drive the connections to education and employment and join a welcoming community of peers and staff.

The LAYC/MMYC seeks a dynamic candidate to fill the Youth Developer (YD) position for our Mentoring initiatives. The YD will work with a team of youth, staff, and community partners to strengthen and grow mentoring engagements, primarily across three programs. The Full Circle Brotherhood (FCB), led by the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) in collaboration with the YMCA trains formerly out of school male youth to mentor middle school boys. The program emphasizes the social and emotional development, school success, and healthy behaviors of both mentors and mentees. Mentor Forward (MF) is a newly launched program which pairs adult volunteer mentors with younger mentees and builds community through connections with youth, mentors, families, and partners. Watkins Mill High School Summit (WMHSS) is a summer bridge program for incoming 9th graders that incorporates peer leadership and engaging events throughout the year.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit and interview potential mentor candidates;
  • Design training and professional development workshops in collaboration with partners;
  • Assist with planning team building activities, including overnight retreats;
  • Work with mentors and staff to design FCB program structure, content and activities;
  • Supervise mentor participation and provide feedback based on engagement and performance;
  • Assist in coordinating logistics including transportation, food, stipend distribution, and communication with project partners;
  • Serve as the on the ground liaison with partners, including schools and parents;
  • Document, in client’s file and ETO, all contacts with youth, family members, LAYC staff, and representatives from other agencies involved in the provision of client services;
  • Report incidents according to LAYC and project partners’ policies;
  • Contribute to the elaboration and update of program syllabi/curriculum on topics such as academic enhancement, motivation, anger management, acculturation, problem solving, community building, male responsibility, advocacy, conflict resolution, and conservation;
  • Lead weekly activities of FCB throughout the Year and WMHSS during the summer;
  • Attend weekly and monthly programmatic meetings with Program Manager and partners to review progress and address any issues;
  • Prepare monthly statistical and narrative reports as assigned for grant purposes, which are given to the Program Manager;
  • Report on time, unless a legitimate excuse is provided;
  • Improve professional skills by attending workshops, seminars, and training sessions as allowed by the time and funding constraints;
  • Perform other duties as assigned;
  • Adhere to all LAYC personnel policies.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Minimum of two-years working with high need adolescents and families, preferably in an afterschool, community-based and multicultural setting;
  • A Bachelor’s in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or related field or additional experience working in a similar program;
  • Experience in developing and implementing programs;
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution, positive youth development philosophy;
  • Experience supervising, guiding and coaching young people;
  • Ability to evaluate youth’s emotional, behavioral and social needs;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills;
  • Ability to relate to culturally diverse population;
  • Computer proficiency relating to Microsoft Office and experience with data management systems;
  • Complete criminal, TB and child abuse and neglect clearances;
  • Obtain CPR and First Aid certifications;
  • Complete random drug tests on a yearly basis;
  • Valid Driver’s license;
  • Fluency in English and bilingual English/Spanish preferred;

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 25 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
